Bigwig . . . (person of importance) Seen in print as early as 1792, bigwig has its origins in the large wigs once worn by men of rank and distinction. The term formerly carried the connotation that, although the wigs themselves were of formidable size, the heads they covered had little or nothing in them. Smyth defined “bigwig” in The Sailor’s Wordbook as an expression “applied to high-ranking officers.” Modern social usage is usually applied to VIPs, CEOs, and other individuals who have inordinate wealth or position.
