Main description
Number Power: Consumer Math is the newest member of the most popular adult mathematics series, Number Power. This text combines everyday math problem solving with ESL activities and basic mathematics skills instruction. Students will be provided lessons on banking, price comparison, credit cards, interest calculations, utility bills, etc. Each lesson specifically targets the CASAS Competencies.
The text is divided into two parts:
- Consumer Math lessons presents students with real-life practical application mathematics problems. Students will apply their knowledge of mathematical operations to such broad topics as Wages and Salaries, Home Renovation, Investing, Loans, and Income Tax
- A basic math review of all skills addressed in the lessons. This section provides a review of rounding, estimating, averages, decimals, fractions, percents, interest calculations, perimeter and area, and using a calculator
ESL Activities
Students will not only be introduced to specific consumer math problems and situations, but be provided with vocabulary and language activities. Each lesson in
Number Power: Consumer Math includes three ESL pages. These activities are developed for second language students to help them with the language of mathematics. The first page of each lesson is called Pre-Lesson Vocabulary Practice and provides vocabulary word activities that are based on the terminology used in the lesson. Students will work through activities with the help of a vocabulary list and definitions. Each lesson ends with two ESL activity pages. The first is Post-Lesson Vocabulary Reinforcement and contains activities to reinforce the math terms used in the lesson. The second ESL activity is Language Builder and helps students build their language skills using math sentences. The math sentences address the lesson topics and teach students such language skills as nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.
